Can you recall the last day in which you did not log onto your Linkedin, Facebook or Twitter account? Now can you recall the last time you logged on and didn’t see a video within the first few scrolls of your news feed?

That’s because video is taking over our news feeds.

This was spearheaded by none other than Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg back in 2016, when he said that:

“Ten years ago, most of what we shared and consumed online was text. Now it’s photos, and soon most of it will be video. We see a world that is video first with video at the heart of all our apps and services.” – Mark Zuckerberg

Skip to 2019 and we’re now living in the age of video first.

With Facebook initially taking the first steps, subsequently the other platforms have quickly followed suit. This is hardly surprising when you think human beings process video 60,000 times faster than text.  We are visual creatures and video instantly ignites emotion which in turn creates a personal connection. This further reinforces the importance of having video on your social media channels.

In this blog I’m going to give you just 3 reasons why you should be using video on social media.

 

1. Social Media platforms love video content

Reason number one, Social media platforms love video content and Facebook in particular prioritise video over text and photos. As I mentioned earlier Mark Zuckerberg said that in 2016 “We see a world that is video first with video at the heart of all our apps and services.”  He also went onto say in 2017 that “I see video as a mega trend, same order as mobile.”

You’ll notice yourself how much video you see on a daily basis when you scroll through your social media platforms. To back that up Socialbakers report that Facebook videos receive 135% more organic reach on average than a Facebook photo. Staggeringly Facebook racks up over 8 billion average daily views and over 100 million hours of video is watched each day. Without a doubt Facebook is the leading player in the social media video landscape.

That being said Facebook isn’t the only option for using video on social media. Instagram (albeit owned by Facebook) unsurprisingly share the same vision and have increased their video lengths from 15 seconds to 60 seconds. Twitter has also followed suit and has increased the length of videos that users can upload jumping from 30 seconds to 10 minutes.

Although Linkedin is not dominated by video yet, you can certainly see its on the increase. Previously Linkedin would only allow users to embed videos into their posts, however they have now enabled users to upload videos natively. Recently a study showed 59% of senior executives agree that if both video and text is available on the same topic and on the same page they would prefer to watch a video. This indicates that the number of videos you see on Linkedin will only increase.

I think the demand for video on social media is only going to grow exponentially and I feel that if you’re not using video now or in the near future, you stand a good chance of being left behind.

2. Drive Traffic to your website

The second reason why I think you should use video on social media is that video helps drive traffic to your website. Now before you jump straight into the world of video, it’s crucial that you are crystal clear as to what your goal is. What does success look like? What do you want viewers to do after watching your video?  

If your goal is to drive traffic to your website, then using video on social media is a fantastic way to do that. According to Sprout Social 46% of users act after viewing a video. Although using video on social media is a fantastic way to drive traffic to your website, you need to make it clear and obvious to the viewer. You can do this by having a strong call to action. If you want to direct viewers to the testimonials section on your website. Then tell them. ‘Click on the link above to see how we helped X’ then put a link to your testimonial section on your website.

3. Increase Brand Awareness

Now last but not least, brand awareness. For me, social media is by far and above the best way to showcase your brand to millions of people. The reach of social media is staggering. Social media platforms have allowed small businesses and startups the ability to reach customers that in the past was reserved only for the large corporates with millions to spend on advertising.

Whereas now advertising on social media is so cheap and the amount of people you can reach is unbelievable. I mean you can now spend 15 quid on a Facebook advert and reach 40,000 people.

But it’s not just that it puts your brand in front of so many people, it’s that it allows you to precisely target your content to your exact demographic.

So if you’re not using social media to get your brand out there, then you really need to start doing so. One way to catapult your brand to the masses is by using video. According to wordstream video generates 1200% more shares than text and image content combined. Which is huge and that alone is a good enough reason to start using video on social media.
